Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. In her early years, Ruth Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away in a tragic way, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner to help them survive. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. Her school was closed in two years in order to study acting. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. As a hat check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. There she was able to earn a living working as an usherette during the during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
